How to read the numbers on this page+
- SD (standard deviation)
- The standard way researchers measure how much a score shifted. In education research, anything above 0.10 SD is considered a real, meaningful effect.
- pp (percentage points)
- "+12pp graduation" means 12 more students out of every 100 graduated than in the comparison group, not a vague 12% bump.
- Effect size / Hedges' g
- A number that describes how big a difference an intervention made, on a common scale so different studies can be compared. Similar in spirit to SD.
- Meta-analysis
- A study that statistically pools many smaller studies into one combined estimate, usually more reliable than any single study alone.
- RCT (randomized controlled trial)
- The gold-standard study design: participants are randomly assigned to get the intervention or not, which rules out the objection that the kids who signed up were just different to begin with.
- Quasi-experimental / fixed-effects design
- A rigorous but not-fully-randomized design, often comparing the same students to themselves before and after, used when a true RCT isn't practical. Weaker than an RCT, stronger than a simple before/after comparison.
What The Argument Institute actually charges
Pricing is published on its speech-and-debate-coaching page, not on a standalone pricing page, which is likely why it is easy to miss. Its full in-season Debate Coaching package runs $3,250 and covers twice-weekly classes (80 sessions total) from August through late May, plus video content library access and instructor contact; additional PF and LD file access runs $1,000 more, and individual drills are $50 each. A separate Speech Coaching package (public speaking and interpretation, not competitive debate) runs $1,850 for ten scheduled 1-hour sessions with draft editing and research support included.
That $3,250 figure covers close to a full school year already, landing in a similar range to several other established programs in this category, and it is worth crediting: the pricing is genuinely there on the page once you know which page to look at, which is more transparency than a couple of larger competitors in this space manage.
Where the two programs differ
Price. At $3,250/year, The Argument Institute costs more than double Podium Debate's $150/month (about $1,200/year).
Format and specialization. The Argument Institute's public materials describe general "speech and debate coaching" rather than naming Lincoln-Douglas as a specific focus. Podium Debate is built specifically around LD, the individual-accountability format, for grades 5-12 with real emphasis on the middle-school range.
Track record and scale. The Argument Institute is a newer, smaller operation without the tournament results or client volume that larger competitors publish, and its visible social proof (reviews, testimonials) is thinner than most programs on this list. That is a real, honest difference, and it cuts both ways: it may mean more personalized attention per student, or it may mean less institutional infrastructure behind the coaching. We would encourage asking directly about coach backgrounds and results before enrolling anywhere with a thin public track record, including us; verifiable coaching credentials are something we publish on our own coaches page for exactly this reason.
Where to land
