Debate vs. robotics and STEM clubs: which one fits your kid?

How to read the numbers on this page+
- SD (standard deviation)
- The standard way researchers measure how much a score shifted. In education research, anything above 0.10 SD is considered a real, meaningful effect.
- pp (percentage points)
- "+12pp graduation" means 12 more students out of every 100 graduated than in the comparison group, not a vague 12% bump.
- Effect size / Hedges' g
- A number that describes how big a difference an intervention made, on a common scale so different studies can be compared. Similar in spirit to SD.
- Meta-analysis
- A study that statistically pools many smaller studies into one combined estimate, usually more reliable than any single study alone.
- RCT (randomized controlled trial)
- The gold-standard study design: participants are randomly assigned to get the intervention or not, which rules out the objection that the kids who signed up were just different to begin with.
- Quasi-experimental / fixed-effects design
- A rigorous but not-fully-randomized design, often comparing the same students to themselves before and after, used when a true RCT isn't practical. Weaker than an RCT, stronger than a simple before/after comparison.
What the research actually shows
Robotics has a genuinely strong evidence base behind it, longitudinal rather than anecdotal. Brandeis University's Center for Youth and Communities ran a 10-year study following FIRST Robotics participants against a matched comparison group, concluding in 2024. It found that 83% of FIRST alumni pursue a STEM major by their fourth year of college, that 51% of female FIRST alumnae declare a major specifically in engineering or computer science by that point, and that 63% of FIRST alumni are currently employed in a STEM field. The wage data is specific too: early-career female FIRST alumnae reported an average salary of $62,000, against a $43,000 peer average.
That is a real, decade-long tracked evidence base, and it measures something debate research does not attempt to: durable STEM career-pipeline effects. Debate's strongest research, by comparison, Schueler and Larned's 2025 study using Boston Public Schools administrative records, measures a different thing: a 0.13 standard deviation gain in ELA test scores, concentrated in analytical reasoning rather than STEM career trajectory.
The structural difference
Robotics builds technical problem-solving inside a team, with mechanical, electrical, and software roles that are genuinely different jobs on a shared physical deadline. It teaches iteration on a real system: build it, test it, watch it fail, fix it, against a fixed competition rubric and a hard deadline.
Lincoln-Douglas debate builds argumentation and individual accountability, with no shared object and no divided labor. One student researches a position, builds a case alone, and defends it against a live opponent trying to take it apart in cross-examination, with the ballot carrying just their name.
These skills are close to non-overlapping, which is exactly why so many strong students do both rather than picking one. A student who lights up debugging a robot's autonomous code under a tournament deadline is often also very good, once taught the format, at spotting the weak link in an opponent's argument.
