Is my child ready for debate? Take the 60-second assessment

By Podium Debate Editors · August 2, 2026 · 1 min read

Most parents visiting a debate coaching site are asking a version of the same question: is my kid actually ready for this, or would they be in over their head?

There's no single right answer, it depends on where your student is right now, not just their age. That's the whole idea behind our skill ladder in the first place: placement by readiness, not by grade.

To make that concrete before you ever talk to us, we built a short interactive assessment. Four questions: your student's grade, how comfortable they are speaking in front of others today, whether they've done any debate or public speaking before, and what you're mainly hoping this builds (confidence, sharper thinking, or real competitive results).

At the end, you get a starting-point recommendation on our six-level ladder, in plain language, along with what the first few sessions would likely focus on. It's an estimate, not a locked-in track, your student's actual placement session is what sets their real starting level, but it's a genuinely useful way to calibrate expectations before that first conversation.

If the result raises more questions than it answers, that's exactly what a placement call is for.
