Potomac Debate Academy is a large, multi-city enrichment operation. Its own site states it has taught more than 2,800 students in the current year alone, spans grades 2 through 12, and runs both in-person classes (based in Rockville, Maryland) and online classes marketed nationally, with separate landing pages built for individual cities including Washington D.C. and Dallas. That is a genuinely different scale of operation than a specialist coaching program, with a genuinely different pitch to match.

What Potomac actually charges

Potomac's tuition is published on its class schedule page, not on a dedicated pricing page, which is likely why it is easy to miss on a first pass. Fall 2026 sections run $850 for a 12-week term (starting in September) or $1,100 for a 16-week term covering the same fall window (starting in August), both for a single weekly 1.5-hour class averaging around 11 students. Run two comparable terms across a school year and a family is looking at roughly $1,700 to $2,200 for the year, in the same range as several other established programs in this category.

What Potomac actually teaches

Potomac's programs cover Public Forum and World Schools debate, not Lincoln-Douglas, alongside broader public-speaking instruction. It publishes a real glossary page defining debate terms for parents with no prior exposure to the activity, a genuinely useful resource more of this category should build. It offers a free trial class as its entry point, and cites a long list of tournament results, including recent Harvard and IPPF World Championship wins, plus students it says go on to top colleges.

Where each one actually fits

Age range and breadth. Potomac's grades 2-12 range and dual-format instruction suits a family wanting one broad enrichment provider across a wide age span, including kids in grades 2-4 outside our own range entirely. Podium Debate is narrower on purpose: grades 5-12, one format, Lincoln-Douglas, with real depth in that lane rather than breadth across several.

Format. If your student is doing Public Forum or World Schools and Potomac's multi-city online option or Rockville classroom fits your schedule, that is a legitimate, well-established choice. If you want Lincoln-Douglas specifically, individual accountability with no partner to share a round's outcome, Potomac does not teach the format at all.

Price and commitment. The two land in a similar annual range, so price alone is not the deciding factor here the way it is against some other competitors. The more relevant difference is commitment structure: Potomac's tuition is a per-term payment tied to a fixed 12-16 week schedule, while Podium Debate is $150/month, month-to-month, with no term commitment and no upfront joining fee.

If Lincoln-Douglas is the format your student wants, or your family wants a month-to-month program rather than a per-term one, that is where we fit. If Public Forum or World Schools with a large, established multi-city operation is what you are looking for, Potomac is a legitimate, well-reviewed option worth a look, including for younger siblings outside our grade range.
