What the Research Actually Says About Debate and Academic Outcomes

"Debate is good for kids" is the kind of claim every program makes and almost none of them back up with numbers. Here are the actual numbers, from published, peer-reviewed research — with what they mean in plain terms.

How to read the numbers on this page+
SD (standard deviation)
The standard way researchers measure how much a score shifted. In education research, anything above 0.10 SD is considered a real, meaningful effect.
pp (percentage points)
"+12pp graduation" means 12 more students out of every 100 graduated than in the comparison group, not a vague 12% bump.
Effect size / Hedges' g
A number that describes how big a difference an intervention made, on a common scale so different studies can be compared. Similar in spirit to SD.
Meta-analysis
A study that statistically pools many smaller studies into one combined estimate, usually more reliable than any single study alone.
RCT (randomized controlled trial)
The gold-standard study design: participants are randomly assigned to get the intervention or not, which rules out the objection that the kids who signed up were just different to begin with.
Quasi-experimental / fixed-effects design
A rigorous but not-fully-randomized design, often comparing the same students to themselves before and after, used when a true RCT isn't practical. Weaker than an RCT, stronger than a simple before/after comparison.

The strongest study in the field. Schueler and Larned (2025), published in Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis, studied Boston Public Schools debaters using a student-fixed-effects design — comparing each student to themselves in years they did and didn't debate, which controls for a lot of the "debate kids were already high-achievers" objection. They found ELA test score gains of 0.13 standard deviations, which the authors describe as equivalent to 68% of a full year of average 9th-grade learning. Debaters were 12 percentage points more likely to graduate high school and 12 percentage points more likely to enroll in postsecondary education, with that enrollment gain concentrated in 4-year and private institutions. Broken out by subskill, the gains were concentrated in reading and analysis rather than grammar and vocabulary — which tracks with what debate actually trains: argument construction, not sentence mechanics. For context, a research review of randomized education trials found the average reading effect from high-school interventions generally runs around 0.05–0.06 standard deviations. Debate's effect here is more than double that.

The middle-school-specific study. Shackelford (2019), in Educational Researcher, is the one study focused specifically on elementary and middle-school debaters — a 10-year longitudinal sample from Baltimore. It found a 0.21 SD gain in 8th-grade reading, a 0.13 SD gain in 8th-grade math, a 10-percentage-point lower probability of chronic absenteeism, and an increased likelihood of debaters going on to attend a selective-entrance-criteria high school. That last finding is a real, measured result, not an inference.

Why not just more academic tutoring instead? Deming (2017), in the Quarterly Journal of Economics, found that jobs requiring high social skills grew steadily from 1980–2012, while math-intensive-but-low-social-skill jobs — including many STEM roles — actually shrank as a share of employment. Wage growth was strongest specifically in roles requiring both math and social skills together. Debate is one of the few academic activities that trains the second half of that pairing directly.

Graduation and GPA. Anderson and Mezuk (2012), in the Journal of Adolescence, followed Chicago students from 1997–2007 and found debaters were 70% more likely to graduate and three times less likely to drop out than comparable non-debaters, controlling for prior test scores and GPA — and the effect was strongest among the highest-risk students (72% graduation among debaters versus 43% among non-debaters in that group). A related study (Mezuk et al., 2011) found an average GPA of 3.23 among debaters versus 2.83 in a comparison group.

A federal rating, not a debate-industry claim. The U.S. Department of Justice's CrimeSolutions registry formally rates urban debate programs "Promising," citing a statistically significant positive effect on high school graduation and college readiness. That's a federal agency's independent evaluation, which carries a different kind of weight than a program's own marketing.

None of this means debate guarantees any individual outcome — it doesn't, and we won't tell you it does. What it means is that the case for debate isn't a vibe. It's one of the more rigorously studied extracurricular interventions in education research, and the numbers are specific enough to check.
