The 3-Minute Pre-Round Warm-Up
Run this in the five minutes before a round, a practice speech, or even a cold-read at home. It takes about three minutes once you know it.
1. Breath reset (30 seconds)
Four slow breaths: in for four counts, hold for four, out for six. This is not relaxation for its own sake, it is resetting your breath support before you need it for projection.
2. Articulation drill (60 seconds)
Say each of these three times, faster each time, exaggerating every consonant: "The big black bug bit the big black bear." "Red leather, yellow leather." "Unique New York, unique New York, unique New York." If your words are slurring, slow down until they are not, then speed back up.
3. Range slide (30 seconds)
Hum from your lowest comfortable note to your highest and back down, three times. This wakes up your vocal range so you are not starting a round in a flat monotone.
4. One-sentence thesis, out loud (60 seconds)
Say your case's core claim out loud, once, at full volume and pace, as if a judge were already in the room. Not your whole case, just the one sentence you would want a judge to remember if they heard nothing else.
That is it. Do this the same way every time, so it becomes a routine your body recognizes as "we are about to perform," not a new decision every round.
